My Turn to Read Out Loud

Scared of reading aloud in class · about 5 minutes

Six chairs are pulled in around a low table at the back of the classroom; six identical copies of the same book lie open at page forty-one, one per place, in the quiet morning before the reading group starts.

Tuesday morning. At the back of the second-grade room, six chairs around the same low table. Six copies of the same book, all open to page forty-one. Miss Ferris’s tea had been going cold on the windowsill since eight-thirty. Nobody was ever going to drink it now.

Bram could read. Oh, he could read. He’d finished this book at home, in bed, by flashlight. Even the chapter they hadn’t gotten to yet. He knew about the boat. He knew what happened to the dog. None of that was the problem.

The problem was his voice. In a room with people in it, the first line came out thin and slipped, like a bike chain jumping off. Clack. Last Tuesday it cracked in the middle of a word. The nine lines after it were fine. But he could still hear that first one.

Miss Ferris picked Fin first. Fin gave the dog a deep growly voice. GRRRUFF. He did the seagull too, and Miss Ferris let him. Zed hummed while he waited. One note. Mmmmm. He had no idea he was doing it.

Bram found the paragraph he thought would be his. Four lines, near the bottom. It began: Nobody told the dog. He said those four words inside his head, mouth shut. Then again. Nobody told the dog. Nobody told the dog.

Behind them a wasp kept bonking into the window. Bonk. Bonk. In the middle of Zed’s turn, Miss Ferris got up, pushed the window open with one hand, waited, and sat back down. Then Ines read. Ines turned pages like they’d done something wrong.

Ines reached the period. And stopped. The room did its in-between thing, when the radiator is suddenly the loudest thing in it. Tick. Tick. Bram’s hands grabbed the edge of the table. Miss Ferris looked up.

Her mouth was already open. There was a name in it. It hadn’t come out yet.

What does Bram do?

Every choice costs something. Let’s see what.
